The Chicago Public Library Foundation will host its 14th annual Carl Sandburg Literary Awards dinner on Wednesday, October 23, at the UIC Forum. Co-chairs Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts and Senior Vice President at Essex Investment Management Marcy Carlin will host over 600 guests at the dinner with the goal of raising over $1.5 million, which was raised at last year’s event.
This year’s honorees include Isabel Allende (The House of the Spirits, Island Beneath the Sea), winner of Chile’s 2010 National Prize for Literature, and Michael Lewis (Moneyball, The Blind Side; Liar’s Poker; Boomerang), bestselling nonfiction writer and journalist. Grace Paley Prizewinner Christine Sneed (Little Known Facts, Portraits of a Few of the People I’ve Made Cry) will receive the 21st Century Award, honoring significant recent achievement by a writer with ties to Chicago. Following dinner, Scott Simon, host of National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, will moderate a Q&A with the honorees.
“It is a privilege to present Carl Sandburg Literary Awards to Isabel Allende and Michael Lewis, whose acclaimed yet vastly different bodies of work have exposed countless readers across the world to the incomparable power of literature,” shares Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon. “To honor these writers’ enormous achievements while simultaneously celebrating Chicago’s rich literary community and supporting the Library’s innovative educational outreach initiatives makes the Sandburg Awards Dinner a truly extraordinary evening.”
