5 Simple Beauty Tips to Protect Your Skin This Winter

Longing for the days when the sun lingers on your naturally glowing skin? We all are! Here are simple pointers on how to protect your skin during a long winter season.

1. Use a creamy cleaner when you wash
Wash your face gently with a Green Tea Foaming Cleanser in a circular motion. Always pat dry your skin with a towel. Note how your skin feels clean but not tight and dry. Then follow up with a gentle Green Tea Toner with a cotton ball. Stick to any product that contains Green Tea Extract: It has plenty of antioxidants, and I think it is safer to use.

2. Upgrade your moisturizer
Use a heavier moisturizer than what you usually use in the winter. Heavier cream will create more of a protective barrier against the drier air of winter. I would use it in the morning and the evening.

3. Exfoliate once a week
Dry weather leaves a layer of ash on your skin. Add a gentle exfoliating step to your skin-care routine to remove this layer of dead cells. This will help keep your skin radiant. At TKI, we have just started to offer Dermaplaning in our Medical Skincare department, which I highly recommend! It is an effective procedure for exfoliating the top layer of the skin (epidermis). In addition, it removes fine hair or ‘peach fuzz.’ It is a nonabrasive method of removing the top layer of skin.

4. Moisturize your entire body like your face
You should always treat your body the same way you treat your face – especially your neck, elbows, knees and décolleté. No matter how well you keep your face looking young, your neglected body parts will tell everyone exactly how old you really are. I am not saying that you should use the most expensive creams on your body; you can use any kind of lotion or body products. I can tell you that I can definitely tell the difference between skin that has been moisturized and taken care of versus neglected. Trust me, people will always comment on how soft your skin is! Start now, don’t delay this anti-aging effort! Sooner is better!

5. Exfoliate your elbows and heels
I didn’t think much of this until I got a bit older and realized my heels and elbows were so dry that I was scratching my nylons and my husband’s legs when I was sleeping. I finally found a fabulous cream that softens the dry, rough and callused heels and elbows. I call it the ‘Heel and Elbow Crème,’ which has an emollient 18% glycolic acid so it has a double benefit. I would put the lotion on before I put my socks on in the morning, and it was moisturizing my feet while I was working all day long.
