In Part 1: Would You Hire this Woman?, we introduced to you a seemingly qualified job applicant who left a sketchy impression during her interview. The question was, “Was she high, or hired?”
Crazy at it may seem, my intuition said – or maybe it was the engineer in me that said – “Hire Lisa.” My team was not so sure. So we hired Lisa into a virtual role – one that required no client interaction and very limited engagement with our team.
Lisa was a star! Parked at a home office, she thoroughly managed the projects she was assigned. She took initiative; was a creative problem solver; and managed her time and the company’s resources extraordinarily well. Lisa showed up for our all-team meetings and she was a thoughtful contributor. With her presence came a sense of calm, comfort, and she had a pretty decent sense of humor. No one never smelled anything reminiscent of marijuana after Lisa was hired.
We wound up letting go of the candidate we hired for the original role – one that interviewed well and didn’t smell like mary jane at the interview. The team agreed that Lisa was a great fit for the role and the business. Like every member of The Image Studios team, Lisa participated in a personal branding session. She received and embraced the feedback about superficial elements of her physical presence: the volume of her speaking voice, her hair color and makeup.
Lisa’s successful stint with us paved the way for an even better job opportunity for her. She received a job offer from one of our vendors. And while we were sad to see her go, we knew that the new opportunity was a better fit for Lisa’s next phase of professional development.
Our second impression of Lisa, the one during the live interview, was wrong. And we almost passed up the opportunity to work with this fantastic contributor.
