April 2013 Man of the Month: Aaron Freeman

Stand-up Comic/Writer/Producer/Blogger

In April, 1987, TCW did a magazine parody on itself called Today’s Chicago Womanizer and who better to feature on the cover than Aaron Freeman. Back then he was considered ‘Chicago’s crown prince of satire.’ Today, Mr. Freeman’s LinkedIn page describes him as ‘Funnyman-All Media.’ And the man is genuinely funny. Some say that Aaron Freeman invented comedy in Chicago.

Thirty years ago he exploded onto the Chicago entertainment scene with Council Wars, his Star Wars parody of the political battles between Mayor Harold Washington and the white majority city council. In those days, who can forget his hysterical musical play, Do The White Thing. Add to that a six-minute, wildly popular comedy that had the right jokes for the right time. For a few months it was the number one request on Chicago radio. The comic also worked with The Second City.

“I still work there occasionally as a teacher and perform with their REACH company,” Mr. Freeman says. Plus, he spent a decade as a host on WBEZ radio and was a science reporter for WTTW Channel 11. “That proves I’m old and have been fired from many jobs, three times from The Second City alone,” he quips.
