How's Your Resolution Coming Along?

When it comes to New Year's resolutions, chances are you fall into one of the following three categories:

1) You are doing great. Keep it up!

2) You are renegotiating the terms of their resolution (A.K.A. Struggling).

3) You have already said, "Screw it!"

Regardless of where you fall in those three categories, it is important to remember that goals are just that: GOALS. Goals are things that you would like to complete in your lifetime; and chances are you will when you are ready. Remember, you can start a new goal whenever you feel motivated and inspired! So, don't wait for next year. Create small achievable goals throughout the year.

The following formula usually works well with my clients when they set a goal for themselves:

1) Be specific about the behavior you are looking to change, improve or develop. When you are specific about the behavior and drill down to the essence of what you are looking to change, you will then be able to identify if your goal is behavioral or cognitive. This will help you stay focused and create an easy-to-use plan designed to help you achieve your goal in the quickest and most effective way.

2)Be honest and descriptive about why you selected that goal for yourself. I live by the motto, "You can lie to me all day long as long as you don't lie to yourself." Being open about why you want to make this particular change will help you address the doubt, shame, frustration, etc. that you may have. These are the main reasons people do not achieve their goals. So, if you address them early, they are out of the way!

3) Give yourself incremental, measurable goals. Checking on your progress can either be depressing or re-energizing! It all depends on how realistic your goals are. Remember to create small goals that build on each other to help you reach your main goal. That way, checking your progress is a motivating experience.

4) Reward yourself. REALLY. When you achieve a goal, give yourself a "good-job" pat or special treat!

I hope this was helpful and wish you the best in achieving your goals! Questions? Post or email me: jinnie@highachiever.net.
