CSO Women’s Board President Katie Barber

The Women’s Board of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) recently celebrated their annual event, REMIX IV: Shaken & Stirred, at the CSO (220 South Michigan Avenue) on Friday, March 7. Hosted by the CSO’s Women’s Board members Leslie Henner Burns, Ruthie Ryan, Kim Shepherd and Shelley Ochab, guests enjoyed cocktails, a performance by Pink Martini and special guests the von Trapps (four descendants of the renowned Captain von Trapp who was portrayed in The Sound of Music), followed with a delectable dinner and a delightful dessert buffet.

Currently serving as the CSO’s Women’s Board President, Katie Barber joined the board in 2009 when it was formed. Ms. Barber discusses the board’s mission: “The Women’s Board hosts the annual Symphony Ball, which benefits the CSO’s general operating fund. The CSO’s winter party – REMIX – supports the community outreach activities of the Institute for Access and Training, and the CSO’s Citizen Musician initiatives. Right now, we are working closely with the Institute to find a community engagement volunteer project for our group to support.”

Formerly employed at AT&T for 15 years, Ms. Barber ‘retired’ after giving birth to her third son. Ms. Barber’s first project outside of the corporate world was raising funds for scholarships at her children’s school. Ms. Barber shares, “I am a trustee for High Jump, an educational enrichment program for academically motivated middle school students with financial need. Working with the CSO has added a nice balance to my life.”
