Winemaker and proprietor Cheryl Indelicato added two new wines to the HandCraft line this summer, which should push the brand to around 150,000 cases for 2013. The two new additions are blended wines: Inspiration Red and Inspiration White, both retailing for under $15. Inspiration White is a blend of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Moscato and Pinot Grigio. Inspiration Red is comprised of Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Malbec and Sangiovese.
The HandCraft range, a collaboration between Cheryl Indelicato and winemaker Alicia Ysais, initially included a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petite Sirah (all priced at $14.99). All the HandCraft wines are also blended with small amounts of Italian and heritage varietals. DFV donates a portion of HandCraft’s proceeds to breast cancer research, awareness and prevention. Last year, the company donated a total of $100,000 to the cause.
The brand recently connected with Sheri Phillips, MD, a Chicago native, breast cancer survivor and the National Spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. “Being a doctor was my life’s dream, and that’s what I did for 18 years,” she says. “Then cancer intervened, followed by disabling lymphedema, deep soul-searching, and life-changing participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure.”
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Phillips at a lunch at Embeya this summer to learn more about her current endeavors as a healthcare consultant, motivational speaker and voice-over talent based in Greater Chicago. Cheryl Indelilcato was so taken by her story when they met at the 3-day last year that she has asked Dr. Phillips to represent these female-focused wines. Dr. Phillips is a true passionate/energetic advocate and an inspiration for all survivors. And she’s only just learning about wine and enjoying the ride.
