Good Looks for Bad Relationships

Studies show that a bad relationship can make you sick – literally. Sometimes, the only way out of a bad relationship is to change how you are perceived by the other person.

The three techniques for changing impressions in existing relationships are the direct approach, indirect behavioral approach, and use of visual cues. The direct approach works quickly and is used when you know exactly what caused a wrong impression of you.  The indirect behavioral approach takes longer and is effective even when you are uncertain how someone wound up with their very wrong impression of you. Visual cues are catalysts for change in relationships. Simply changing how you and the things that surround you look, inspires people to ‘think again’ before accepting as true a former impression they held of you.

It may seem trivial to rearrange your workspace, change your hairstyle or refine you attire, but it’s not. The double-take created by even minor visual cues can create just space a person needs to experience differently what you say and do. For this reason, it is effective to use visual cues in conjunction with either the direct or indirect behavioral approach.

Changes in appearance are powerful because people are able to rapidly assimilate information visually: A picture is worth a thousand words. So when you want to reinvent a relationship, let them see who you really are.
