Makeup Mishaps

Avoid these three major beauty mistakes

Beauty blunders: we’re all guilty of them from time to time, no matter how perfectly we polished we are on a day-to-day basis. Here, Victoria’s Secret beauty expert and makeup artist Lauren Cosenza shares the top three biggest mistakes women make when in comes to their cosmetics – and how to avoid these pitfalls.

Over Application “Unless you’re going to be on HDTV, most women do not need to use heavy foundation. Women do this all the time and I think it’s criminal. It actually ages you,” says Ms. Cosenza, who offered us these tips backstage at the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. “Use a light to medium foundation and then go over it with concealer for skin imperfections, such as redness or under eye circles. You want your skin to look natural.”

Unfinished Brows “Another problem is when woman don’t pay attention to their eyebrows,” the beauty expert claims. “The idea is that brows frame the face, and you need to add dimension and sculpt the face using the brows as the anchor. When I see a full face of makeup and the brows are not done, to me it looks like the face isn’t finished. Also, highlighting the brow bone helps to add dimension to the eyes.”

Chapped Lips Ms. Cosenza’s final tip is particularly pertinent as we brave out winter in Chicago. “The last cardinal sin is having chapped lips,” she says. “Right now, color on the lips is very on-trend. If you’re going to use color, please exfoliate your lips and then put balm on top. Even taking a dry toothbrush and getting those flakes off your lips will smooth them out. Otherwise, color settles into dry, chapped skin. There’s nothing pretty about that.”
