America’s obesity epidemic appears to be four times higher than statistics have reported. The concern is the past ‘steady trend’ of lengthened life spans of Americans is reversing for the upcoming generation of younger Americans.
The American Journal of Public Health reviewed Columbia University’s most recent data. Using historical survey data, they combined ‘mortality risk’ stats to ascertain how many (over 40 years) Americans have died due to weight-related causes.
The findings were interesting. First, Americans who became overweight or obese as kids and remained so as adults suffer higher premature death rates. So, start your kids off lean when they’re young! Next, weight-related early mortality struck women harder than men, while African-American women suffered at the hands of excess weight the most. Approximately 22 percent of white women versus 27 percent of African-American women’s deaths were attributed to excess weight. For white men, approximately 16 percent died prematurely due to excess weight.
The study concluded that the probability of too early a death continues to rise steeply among folks displaying excess weight after 60. This study shows a three-fold increase in excess weight/obesity-related ‘early’ deaths over the last 20 years.
