Looks reminiscent of the past awaken new ideas.
It’s true — nothing is considered ‘new’ these days. That’s why we’re looking to the past for inspiration. Again. Winged and smokey eyes, deep red lips and soft pink cheeks are a few retro looks to bring back this fall.
“Looking at trends in fashion and makeup, there is a reminisce of the past that awakens new ideas, advancing the trend with a modern twists,” says Jen Evans, Make Up Forever Academy NYC Educator. “Classic retro looks are timeless, with a little tweaking they can look quite modern.”
Red lips are a great place to start if you’re inclined toward red lips. “A lip primer is an ideal base on bare lips to create a smooth canvas and prevent your lipstick from bleeding,” advises Laksmi Sam, Midwest Beauty Director of Nordstrom. She also recommends using a lip pencil to draw in the perfect lip shape, and “apply lipstick with a lip brush for a defined, precise application.” With so many red hues at every beauty counter, finding the right one can be overwhelming. Ms. Sam suggests choosing orange or brown-based reds if your skin is warmer. For cooler skin tones, a pink or blue-based red is most flattering.
A winged cat eye with liquid liner is also a modern, updated retro option for eyes. But if that’s too much for daytime — which it probably is — a somewhat smoky eye will work as well. For starters, “apply your darkest shade of shadow on your eyelid, then blend a medium shade into the crease, and then pop your brow bone with a lighter shade under the eyebrow,” instructs Ms. Sam. Finish with a few coats of mascara and you’re set. “Beauty For Real’s Miracle Mascara is a great no smudge, smearing or flaking very black mascara that is super easy to layer to build length and volume, plus it’s going to stay in place and not end up under the eyes,” recommends Beauty Forever Creative Director and lead makeup artist Stephanie Giles.
