Recognizing Breat Cancer Awareness Month
The best events and fundraisers around Chicago
Every year, nearly 40,000 women will die from breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the chances of a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime are about one in eight. With the designation of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes an array of events which aim to help, support, fundraise and build awareness about the illness. We rounded up a few of our favorite events taking place in Chicago this month.
Chicago-based Bright Pink and luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue are teaming up throughout October. On Thursday, October 20, Bright Pink will host its annual and hotly anticipated VIPink cocktail party from 8-11pm at Saks Fifth Avenue Michigan Avenue. The soiree kicks off Saks’ annual Key To The Cure, a weekend shopping event that helps support women’s cancer research. The department store will donate 2 percent of the total sales to Bright Pink. “There is going to be a sea of pink (this month), but we are trying to expand on that; make it not just about awareness but a call to action,” says Bright Pink Founder Lindsay Avner. www.brightpink.org
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a multi-city event, helps American Cancer Society expand breast cancer education and research. “It started as a little event in Boston and has grown leaps and bounds since then,” says Erin Richey, director of Mass Markets for ACS. “It’s in honor of those currently fighting and for those who have lost the fight.” The Chicago branch of the non-competitive race takes place on Sunday, October 16 at 9am at Montrose Harbor, and there is no minimum fundraising amount. http://makingstrides.acsevents.org
Get informed on Tuesday, October 4, when the Coleman Foundation Comprehensive Breast Cancer Clinic at Rush University Medical Center examines Research and Treatment Options for Breast Cancer. Oncology specialists will discuss ductal carcinoma in situ, the earliest form of breast cancer, as well as the full range of the latest and most innovative breast cancer treatment options, in a presentation from 6-8pm at the Armour Academic Center. www.rush.edu
The Lynn Sage Foundation is once again launching the popular In Good Taste campaign, taking place throughout the month of October. Over 100 of Chicago’s most popular restaurants, from Avec to Zodiac Room, will give you the option of adding $1 per check (or more if you desire) to be donated to the Foundation. And keep your eyes skyward for the month, as the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation turns the Chicago skyline, from the John Hancock Center to Buckingham Fountain, pink in their annual lighting campaign to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. The Light the Way to Find a Cure campaign serves as a constant reminder for all women to perform self-breast examinations and to detect cancer early. www.lynnsagefoundation.org and www.lynnsage.org
