Sushi Dokku

I’d always been a big fan of Sushi Wabi. Living only blocks away, it quickly became my top choice for sushi dining and carry-out alike. When the restaurant closed last April, I truly went through withdrawal!

However, leave it to two West Loop pioneers, Angela Lee and Susan Thompson (Lee a partner in Grange Hall Burger Bar and De Cero, while Thompson is a partner in Mana Food Bar and Threefold), to open a new space only nine months later, which they refer to as’“the grown up version of Sushi Wabi’ – Sushi Dokku (pronounced Dock-oo) at 823 West Randolph Street.

You can imagine my excitement, not only to have my favorite sushi back, but to experience the evolution of this beloved spot, too. After quietly opening on a wintery Monday in January (and without accepting reservations, as it wasn’t officially opening until the following Monday) the place was completely full just a few days later. I’m happy to report that Sushi Dokku’s Godzilla roll is the exact same as Wabi’s — the perfect textural balance of creamy and crunchy, featuring tempura shrimp, avocado, tobiko, cream cheese and sesame.

The chef’s nigiri bites are new to Dokku and offer a more ‘dressed up’ nigiri. The maguro – yellowfin tuna with garlic soy sauce – is incredibly deep and rich in color, matched with an equally impressive flavor.

I hope you’ll check out Sushi Dokku and let me know what you think!
