Interest in energy and mind-body work among executives and professionals has recently surged. This surge is fortunate and relevant because the spiritual and holistic nature of energy work frees our creative and objective minds. I practice psychotherapy and coaching, yet I also have a whole-hearted belief in mind-body work. I get my chakras cleaned twice per month, I meditate throughout the day and I do “Light Body” energy work with select clients. Such mind-body focus has been integral to my personal and professional success, and it may benefit you as well.
What is Mind-Body Work?
In short, mind-body work integrates mind, body, and spirit/soul so they can communicate with each other in healthy ways. The mind, body and spirit/soul are always communicating with each other whether you realize it or not. For example, you’re overlooked for that promotion again, your kid got suspended from school and on top of that you just got a red light ticket. At the end of the day, week or month, you’ve reached your limit and have either a migraine, muscle spasms, et cetera. This is a classic example of your mind and body communicating with one another. The challenge is getting them to communicate in ways that are healthy and positive so you can better deal with life’s challenges and stressors.
What is Energy Work?
Energy work encompasses a broad range of modalities and practices from the scientific to the religious. Some common forms of energy work are Reiki, Vibrational and Prayer. Energy work is commonly used with individuals who are ill or seeking a stronger connection to something higher than themselves. For example, someone who is struggling to reach a goal yet feels blocked may use energy work to discover what is preventing her from becoming her “Higher Self.”
How Effective Is it?
The Eastern healing practices of mind-body and energy work have been around for thousands of years. Plenty of research shows how mind-body and energy work improves the quality of life for the patient, so much so that it is a part of many cancer treatments and some corporate programs.
As for me, I practice vibrational energy and meditation with my clients, and they often report feeling like they have gone through a year of therapy in just six to eight weeks. While I am still firmly committed to psychotherapy and mental health maintenance, I offer energy work for those who are looking to connect with something or someone higher than themselves.
Mind-body and energy work isn’t for everyone, so if you are interested in mind-body or energy work, look around and make an informed decision that is right for you.
