The Confidence Series: What is it? How to get it, keep it, and use it!
Part 1: What is Confidence anyway?
Confidence (def): a feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances
Self-Confidence (def): confidence in oneself and in one’s powers and abilities
Have you ever been in a room full of people when a confident woman enters? Time stops, and it seems like the entire room, men and women alike, watch her walk in with her head held high. Her look might suggest that she just left the boardroom, hopped of the runway during Fashion Week; or attended her child’s piano recital.
That cliché thought crosses your mind, “There’s just something about that woman…”
There is a common thread that runs through people who politely demand our attention in this way, and it is confidence. Confidence is the prerequisite for success in almost every area of life. Confidence can make us stand out in the crowd, attract people and opportunities, and give us the internal fuel to pursue dreams and goals. However, in the real world, after searching tirelessly for a new job; waiting and waiting and waiting for a fulfilling relationship; or failing to conquer a major challenge, our confidence can shatter into pieces.
True confidence is a co-creation: You believe something about yourself and the world affirms that belief by treating you “that way”. Both are required for true confidence. If you behave powerfully but don’t truly feel powerful, you are pretending and underleveraged. If you feel powerful but the world does not affirm it; aspects of you are invisible, or worse…you may be delusional.
Most of us have and communicate confidence in some areas of our lives, but lack it in others.
