The Health Benefits of Detoxification

detox

‘Detox,’ ‘cleanse,’ ‘detoxification’…all of these seem to be buzzwords now. This is for good reason.

With all the advertisements and information fed to us about health and wellness, these words help remind us of the importance of staying healthy. Detox programs are a wonderful way to do just that. Even if we eat healthy, choose organic foods and drink filtered water, we still take in toxins and pollutants that exist naturally in our environment. It is necessary to take the time and help our bodies to gently remove these from our systems.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), billions of pounds of chemicals are released into our water systems, ground and air, threatening our health and natural resources. Over 400 pesticides and herbicides are used on food crops and several thousand food additives are added to our food supply. Research shows that it is not a question of “if we’re carrying the toxins in our bodies,” but rather, “how much and to what extent” these effect our health.

Naturally, our body is able to rid these harmful toxins through the ‘detoxification process.’ Unfortunately, many of our bodies are compromised in this process due to poor diet and lifestyle choices that we make. These choices increase toxin build-up and slow down the natural process.

“A detox can help to bring us a refreshed feeling on not only a physical level but also our energetic level which is so important to our well-being and happiness,” says Caroline Jung, vice-president of the Illinois Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

An integral part of any detox process is consuming highly nutritious food sources. Detoxification involves three different phases. Water-soluble substances can be effectively excreted from our body. Toxin compounds, however, are typically stored as fatty molecules and, therefore, do not mix well in water. The detoxification process transforms these toxic, fat-soluble substances into harmless, water-soluble molecules which can then be excreted out of our body.

Studies have shown that the overall detox process is heavily nutrient-dependent, whereby key steps are fueled in our bodies by vitamins, minerals, and other major food components. A few of the key nutrients include probiotics, vitamins A, B-3, B-6, amino acids, and many others. Without optimal detoxification, our bodies will not efficiently remove these harmful toxins.

Our kidneys play a major role as well during detoxification by excreting transformed toxic compounds in urine. An alkaline pH level may be an important consideration for proper kidney function. Therefore, a focused, high-impact, low-allergy-potential nutritional support program to promote an alkaline pH level and improve detoxification capacity can be very helpful.

Along with helping to remove toxins, detox can help ease allergy symptoms. This season in particular has been difficult for many of us here in the Chicago area with the early warm weather: Various allergy triggers have been increased and have been starting earlier than expected. A detox can help move any stuck’ pollutants throughout our bodies and help to ease allergy symptoms.

By experiencing a cleaner and lighter feeling in our entire mind, body and spirit, we can achieve a greater awareness in making even more informed and healthier choices. In the end, a detox will bring you a feeling of being recharged and renewed, and ready to take on all of life’s opportunities!
