From teal eyeliner at Marc Jacobs to pale blue eyeshadow at Badgley Mischka, aqua hues are the hottest (or should we say coolest?) shades of the season. Makeup palettes offer a veritable sea of cobalt, teal and cyan to mix and match.
“We’re going retro with the ‘80s,” explains Zee Gustafson, freelance makeup artist and owner of Zee Artistry. “We’re just playing up the eyes to modernize the look.” Indeed, unlike the bright eye/lip combo of the ‘80s, this retro revival of marine-inspired colors is far more pared down and wearable with makeup artists pairing blue shadows with a hint of bronzer and lip gloss.
For everyday wear, forgo bold blocks of blue eyeshadow and subtly incorporate the hue with blue mascara or navy eyeliner “to brighten up your eye.” And according to Ms. Gustafson, it’s no coincidence that aqua hues are a huge spring/summer staple. She says, “We’re out in the sun more and once your skin starts to show more color, it’s easier to wear a brighter tone to accentuate that healthy glow.”
