The Simple Truth About Joy and Misery

I recently went to Sedona, Arizona for some much needed R&R. I visited the vortices – or as they are referred to in Sedona, the vortexes – and they were simply transformative. I climbed Bell Rock and as I sat there, I found myself crying and releasing residual thoughts and feelings for myself and others; it felt like a cleansing of sorts.

After I finished crying, it hit me like a ton of bricks – no one is a victim. I know some of you are cringing right now, but it’s true. You may have been victimized, but you are not a victim unless you choose to be a victim. While I already knew this, it resonated with my essence in an entirely different way. I thought about myself, my clients, friends and family and noticed a pattern – they all created their lives either, consciously or unconsciously. If it is true that there are no victims then everyone has a chance to be whoever and create whatever life they want.

Don’t believe me? Look at those who are self-made or those who inherited their circumstances – good or bad. When those circumstances no longer suited them or reflected who they felt they were at the time, they changed it either consciously or unconsciously – and were passionate about it. Look, we all make choices to keep things as they are or to change them. And, when we avoid making a choice, we have decided to keep our current circumstance the same. Take a minute and think about it.

So how does this tie into how we create our joy and misery? Simple: if you want to be happy, then make choices that lead you toward your happiness. If you want to be miserable, then make choices that lead you towards your misery. It seems to me that most people want to be happy; however, the cost of happiness is comfort. Since the cost of happiness is too high for most people, they settle for their current state.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what I or anyone else says or thinks about your life or how you live it – miserably or not. What does matter is whether it is the life you envision for yourself. So if you want to be happy, then take steps to make it happen even if they are baby steps! You can do it and I’m cheering for you!
