Weddings with a Twist

Savvy brides are breaking tradition.

Something old, something blue…so last year. Here are a few of my favorite trends for the season:

Ostrich Plume Bouquet
Great Gatsby glam is back! A stunning bouquet for your bridal party combines a mass of beautiful white ostrich plumes in a silver-plated ‘tussie mussie.’  Not only does this ‘Hollywood Regency’ bouquet look fabulous for the wedding, it’s an everlasting memento that holds up long past the end-of-night bouquet toss.

Campy Cocktails072_013113_WEB
Tall Champagne flutes are old news. Bubbles taste even better served in vintage canning jars, with colorful candy cocktail stirrers to create DIY mixology madness. Pop-seccos, anyone? Simply pour Prosecco into glasses and garnish with an unwrapped Tootsie Pop in your wedding colors. For example, a red pop slowly melts into your bubbly for a pretty pastel pink wedding cocktail.

Couture Cloths
No more clinical, white-starched tablecloths. Wedding linens are now as elaborate as wedding dresses, reflective of couture beading, vintage lace, metallic thread embroidered netting and more. Stylist secret: BBJ Linen is my go-to source for all things linen and lace countrywide – they deliver right to your door.

Plain glass votive candles have no personality. We can’t have that at your thoughtful, elegant wedding now can we? Instead turn everything old new again, using global glass teacups from Morocco in gilded color palettes to match your wedding décor.

Small Plates Tasting Bars
Sit down dining has nothing on the interactive, mix-and-mingle style of chef driven tasting bars. The menu should reflect both the bride and groom’s favorite foods, farms, regions and travel destinations. Planning tip: Be sure to consider guest dietary needs and serve a mix of vegetarian, meat, seafood and gluten-free options.

Bakery Bar
A slice of cake for dessert? No thank you. I can’t get enough of the beautiful, decadent, Marie Antoinette-inspired petite sweets Bakery Bar dessert display. Create a flavor profile like chocolates, cookies, cupcakes or an abundant combination of all of the above. Set small monogrammed take-home boxes in the display to double up your dessert and wedding favors.

Decaf, regular…it’s just a bore. After dinner drinks go cute when, instead, a Boozy Hot Chocolate Bar is set. Fusion flavors like Chicago favorite Frango Mint Chocolate or Mexican Hot Chocolate are perfect when infused with the guests’ choice of liquors. Frangelico, Baileys Irish Cream and Grand Marnier are just a few favorites. Topped with flavored whipped creams – from strawberry to caramel – and garnished with chopped candies or marshmallows, guests live out their innermost Willy Wonka fantasy.
