The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science (ACWIS) held its annual Midwest Region Gala Dinner at the Fairmont Chicago (200 North Columbus) on Saturday, November 9.
Raising $600,000, chairs Renee Crown and William A. Marovitz welcomed over 400 guests, along with hosts Mary Ann Childers and Jay Levine. The well-deserved honoree of the evening was Chicago philanthropist and Chairman of the Chicago Cubs Tom Ricketts. The ingenious decor by Tom Kehoe of Kehoe Designs featured a Wrigley Field theme, including delectable canapés influenced by ballpark concessions.
“We are so grateful to all the guests who attended the event, and in particular are thankful to Mr. Ricketts for supporting our cause so generously,” says ACWIS Midwest Regional Chair Steven Anixter. “The funds raised will significantly impact the Weizmann Institute’s ability to continue to advance research that can lead to breakthroughs in the fields of medicine, health, energy, technology, agriculture and the environment.”
The evening’s program included a talk by Dr. Pierre Eilian and Jonathan Hersch and how the institute has positively affected their lives. Following, Marshall S. Levin, executive vice president/CEO of ACWIS, discussed the institute’s most recent progress. Prior to honoring Mr. Ricketts with the 2013 Leadership Award, Mr. Marovitz moderated a Q&A with the Chicago Cubs chairman discussing how the Ricketts family became involved with the Cubs.
